ANNUAL EVENTS San Juan Celebrations
On the 24th and the 29th of June the “najerinos” go out and spend several hours making the famous "Vueltas" (rounds), that consist of singing and dancing in groups, with brass bands playing very catchy but monotonous music. It would appear that its origin goes back to the military parades of the soldiers who returned from victory in the Carlist wars and which united the population. Others want to see a reminiscence of the pagan cults of the sun and the fire and the summer solstice celebrations. San Juan Degollao Celebrations
The Brotherhood of San Juan "Degollao", brotherhood with its origin in the defence of the walls and therefore essentially warlike, celebrates their day on the 29th of August. This celebration, in a certain way, constitutes the finishing touch to the summer season in Laguardia. Typical of this day are the Dance of the “Troqueados”, of the "Arcs", and jota (folk music) of Laguardia. San Blás Celebrations
The Sunday nearest to the 3rd of February they celebrate the day of San Blás in Páganos, and perhaps due to being the first celebrations of the year in the zone, are very widely accepted. The whole of Laguardia “goes down” to Páganos. They dance the “Chulalai” and relics are kissed. It is a day when chorizo (spicy sausage) soups, puff pastry and red wine are typical. Hot wine is also typical, perhaps because the cold weather requires it. It is a custom which is becoming more and more extensive; to go out to the blessing of breads called "cachetes" and puff pastries. Day of the Gaitero
On the second Sunday of May one of the most popular days in Laguardia is celebrated, referred to as the Day of the Gaitero. Although this celebration was started as a tribute to Don Jesus Martinez (Jimeleo), head piper of Laguardia, it is a celebration that draws more and more people every year. It is unwise to forget that Laguardia has been cradle of piper-flageolet (traditional wind instrument) players, and that the town, with its medieval feel, constitutes the perfect framework to listen to the echoes of these instruments sounding in its streets. Pipers from all over attend this celebration. Concerts, dances festivals, composition contests, recovery of works, reveilles, and parades etc. form part of the activities that are developed throughout this intense day. Romería to Berberana
On the first Saturday of September, they celebrate the traditional Romería to Berberana, a small hermitage located in the slopes of the mountain range, very near the dolmen of the Sotillo, and about three kilometres from the Villa. This festivity is not exclusive to Laguardia but celebrated in all the towns of the zone, with the purpose of spending a pleasant day, in contact with nature, and enjoying the diverse activities that are organized. San Isidro Celebrations
In the month of May they also celebrate the festival of San Isidro, but in a somewhat special way. Being the patron of the agriculturists, the Agrarian products and Machinery fairs take place on this day. A huge amount of tractors, accessories and products of all types are concentrated throughout the Plaza Nueva, occupying the entire oriental part of the Villa.
