ATTRACTIONS & ACTIVITIES: Beaches Among the many beaches on Mallorca, the traditional and well-established naturist beaches are not to be missed. It is possible to find several of these on Mallorca, some are close to Palma and some are further away. Palma Beach is one of the best known beaches on Mallorca. Just a short distance away from the centre of Palma, this is one of the best cared for and easiest to access beaches on the island. A large slice of Mallorca’s tourism heads for different zones of Palma Beach (Ca'n Pastilla, El Arenal, Cala Estancia,...). If what you are looking for are beaches further from the city, you could head for areas like Calas de Mallorca, with its large variety of beaches, Santa Ponça, Alcudia, Pollença, Formentor - from where on very clear days it is possible to see the island of Menorca - and many others. They have all been recognised by the European Union for being clean and safe beaches. The area of Magaluf, in Calvià, is the recreation zone par excellence for British summer holidaymakers and it has an ample range of restaurants, bars, hotels and discos. Palma Beach
S´Arenal Beach, or Palma Beach is shared between the municipalities of Palma de Mallorca and Llucmajor and has a length of 4,600 m and a breadth of 50 m. One of the most extensive sand dune systems of Mallorca was located here before the construction of the El Arenal tourism centre, and some traces of these dunes can still be seen. Their destruction has provoked serious problems with the natural regeneration of the sand, like with many other Mallorcan beaches, up to the point where sand, washed away by storms, has to be regularly dredged from the sea floor. During the summer the beach is very well populated by thousands of tourists, many of them German, who enjoy their holidays in the area’s hotels. There is a footpath running along the length of the beach where the popular spa and some open air bars, on the footpath, can be found. The most popular of these is located at number 6. Services: Bars and restaurants, shops, showers, lounge chairs, umbrellas, pedal-boat and windsurf rental, water-ski, volleyball nets, etc.
Cala Major
Cala Major is a beach that is located in a densely populated urban area. It is 250m long and 30 wide. To get there, take Gavina Street where there is a bus stop nearby. This place is very well protected from the wind and from the cold that comes from the north, which makes it an ideal spot for swimming in the cooler months. The Marivent Palace, residence of the Spanish monarchs during their summer holidays is found on one of the beach’s shores. Due to this, for security reasons, no boats can be anchored here. Services: All sorts of bars, restaurants, shops, lounge chairs, umbrellas and pedal-boats for hire. Can Pere Antoni The beach of Can Peri Antoni is an artificial beach and is found in front of Palma’s “la Seu” cathedral, next to a palm-lined footpath and bicycle track that runs around the whole bay of Palma de Mallorca. It has 735m of sand and is 25m wide. To get to this beach, the best option is to walk from the city centre. If you go by car, there is parking in the Parc de la Mar and at a free car park next to the beach at the other end by the Portitxol. Services: A restaurant, lounge chairs and umbrellas for hire. Es Portitxolet
Es Portitxolet is a small beach, 90 metres long and 28 wide, located a short distance away from the Es Portitxol port. Leaving the Paseo Marítimo going towards the airport, before taking the motorway to leave Palma de Mallorca, make a turn towards the neighbourhood of Portitxol. The beach is surrounded by houses that make up this residential zone, most of them are not too high and are simply constructed. Cuidad Jardín Beach
Cuidad Jardín Beach is a sandy beach, located in the residential area of Cuidad Jardín. It is 450 metres long and 45 wide and is protected from bad weather by a series of piers. Surrounded by low buildings, many of which have gardens, this is a pleasant area where the park of Torre d´en Pau can also be found. It is a beach often visited by locals. Services: Bars and Restaurants, shops, showers, toilets, lounge chairs and umbrellas for hire. Cala Estancia
Cala Estancia is a sandy beach with a length of 200 metres and a width of 40 metres located on Nanses Street, in the zone of Can Pastilla, which is densely populated in summer. It is protected from the waves by some piers, making its waters very calm. Services: Bars and restaurants, shops, hammocks and sunshades. Es Trenc
Four kilometres of coastline showcase more than 170 species of bird that glide over the beauty of this beach. It is the reigning stretch of virgin sand in Mallorca and created controversy in terms of economic interests, which were aroused by the beach’s potential as a source for unprecedented wealth. A system of dunes separates the beach from the area of cultivated land. As nature flourishes everywhere in Es Trenc, two subterranean springs of different temperatures meet. This peculiarity has been the product of investigations and myths since 1827, which is where its original Catalan name comes from, which means crack or rupture. Cala Mondragó This beach is located inside Montragó Park. It has the necessary services and infrastructure to make a beach a lot more comfortable for its visitors. From this beach it is possible to walk to S´Amarador and to Caló des Borgit. The beach has pleasant surroundings full of vegetation and a grove of pine trees. Parking is easy. Cala Figuera 50 km away from the capital of Palma de Mallorca. It is a fairly calm and picturesque area with a very nice fishing port where concerts by the sea are held in summer. The beach is about 3 km away, although it is possible to swim from the rocks. The entrance to the port is presided over by a defensive tower which protected against the Moors. Today the lighthouse is situated next to the tower. Portals Beach
This beach, with a length of around 110 metres, is located in the municipality of Calvià. Its fine sand makes this one of the most visited beaches of the area. It has all the expected services and good accesses.
