ATTRACTIONS & ACTIVITIES: Theme Parks
Parque de Atracciones Madrid
More than forty exciting rides await us only a few minutes from the centre of Madrid. Along with mythical roller coasters there is some impressive machinery, such as El Tornado (The Tornado), La Lanzadera (Shuttle) or la Turbina (Turbine), hanging roller coasters that reach speeds of 80 km/h (50mph), giant pendulums with 180 degree movements, or free falls from 63 metres of height that will transform your visit into an unforgettable experience. There may be strong emotions in the water attractions such as Los Fiordos (Fjords) or Los Rapidos (Rapids); a great time to refresh yourself. In turn, the Zona de la Tranquilidad (Zone of Tranquility) offers more relaxed activities, such as boat trips through the jungle, a 15 metre high Ferris wheel, or some brilliant radio control games. Young children have their own area with conventional and aquatic roller coasters, bumper cars or pirate ships, all in “mini” size. Puppet theatres, train rides or the adventure trail complete the activities on offer. In addition, during the summer months the Park stages performances by the best contemporary bands.

ZOO AQUARIUM MADRID
The current zoo, located in the Casa de Campo, was opened in 1972, and since then has played a significant role in the study and conservation of wild animals threatened with extinction, and has also increased its collection by means of gifts and donations from other countries. On top of this, since 1987 the zoo has become infinitely more interesting due to the construction of a large Dolphinarium, whose modern facilities house both dolphins and sea lions. There is room for three thousand people to simultaneously enjoy exhibitions on these animals, and several glass observation areas make it possible for observers to follow their movements under water.
On the 16th of May in 1995 the new Aquarium del Zoo de Madrid was incorporated, dedicated to the flora and fauna of tropical oceans. This aquarium is an example of the “new generation” of aquariums, which are generally specialised, and occupies an area of 3000 square metres in the southeast part of the zoo’s grounds.
In 1997, the zoo began to offer the chance to observe the unfettered flight of birds of prey and exotic birds in a large aviary created next to the Dolphinarium. In addition, the charming Zoo Chico, which used to hold semi-domestic species, has been turned into La Pequeña Granja (the Little Farm) an area dedicated to young children who can witness rural farm-life firsthand, and gain insight into how these farms make a significant contribution to daily life in the cities.
