ATTRACTIONS & ACTIVITIES: Museums Museo del Prado (Part of the Paseo del Arte) Located in the centre of the city of Madrid, since 1819 the Museo del Prado has been a nucleus of wide artistic scope, holding masterpieces from all over the world.
The museum is organised in two main buildings which are quite close together: the Edificio Villanueva (the most emblematic), located in the Paseo del Prado and the Casón del Buen Retiro.
In the different exposition halls, visitors can find not only exceptional examples of pictorial art by Spanish artists (Goya, Velázquez, Zurbarán, etc.) but also works by great masters from other schools (Tiziano, Rubens and El Bosco, for example) as well as sculptures of exceptional quality and other types of artistic expression.

Museo Thyssen Bornemisza (Part of the Paseo del Arte)
The Palacio de Villahermosa (19th century) was remodelled by architect Rafael Moneo to house this fabulous collection of paintings. The palace's origins go back to the urban planning of Carlos III (monarch during the Enlightenment).
The land was originally purchased by a Court painter, who built himself a grand house. When the Salón del Prado was established as the new centre, popular with Madrid's 18th-century elite, the Duke of Villahermosa purchased it and had it torn down in order to build a project more in line with new architectural criteria rooted in French Neoclassicism.
