ATTRACTIONS & ACTIVITIES: Theme Parks Waterland Maspalomas Aquasur is the largest aquatic park in the Canaries. It is located in the south of the island, in a tropical oasis close to Maspalomas. Thanks to the good temperatures on the island, the park is open all year round. Contained within its 90.000m² are 13 attractions and 33 slides. The “Tornado” is the star attraction. The Holiday World leisure centre has recently been completely renovated and has been turned into a favourite place for locals and tourists to spend their free time, especially during the weekend.
The new Holiday World brings together all the traditional fairground attractions, such as a 27-metre-high big wheel, a rollercoaster, a pirate ship etc. There are also other facilities, such as a children’s’ playground, a bowling alley, a recreation room, a wellness centre gym (with 3000 square metres of facilities, a swimming pool, spa, sauna etc), cafés, restaurants, two discos (one of which specialises in Salsa music), etc. Sioux City: Head for the past, and to the American Wild West, and meet the mythical warriors like White Grass and cowboys like Doc Holiday, or be trapped in a bank hold-up or in a cold-blooded shootout between cowboys and the representatives of the law… all to be found in Sioux City… a recreation of the American wild west complete with pistol fights, rustic barbeques, bar and Can-Can girls and the Sheriff, all to the tune of Country and Western music. There are loads of attractions and shows to see, like the duel to the death, the bank hold-up, the bar brawl, the hanging in the village square, the Indian rain dance, the Mexican acrobats (with whips and lassoes) and the knife throwers, among others.
Palmitos Park* is the most popular theme park in Gran Canaria, and is fun for the whole family. It is a subtropical oasis situated in a green valley full of palm trees, with more than 200 species of birds, including dwarf hummingbirds, toucans, peacocks, cranes, flamingos and macaques. There are many other attractions, such as an aquarium, a butterfly house and gardens of cacti and orchids. There is a lot to see in Palmitos Park, so it is recommendable to devote at least 2 hours, if not half a day, to the visit in order to stroll through the park and enjoy all of the sights and sounds. This is also the home of the impressive Birds of Prey Show, where eagles, owls and peregrine falcons compete for the crowd’s attention in free flight.
* Please note that Palmitos Park has been severely affected by the recent fire that has taken place in Gran Canaria during July 2007. As a consequence of this tragic event, Palmitos Park will remain closed until further notice. |
