Canario Museum
A scientific and cultural institute founded in 1879 where collections of archaeological and ethnographical material and artistic creations are conserved, studied and exhibited. There is also a library and archive that specialise in themes relevant to the Canary Islands.
Since its creation it has been conceived as a Society for the promotion of the development of the Sciences, Arts and Humanities with an emphasis on those that relate to the Canary Islands. In the beginning the museum housed the collections and objects donated by Dr. Chil and other founders and friends of the Society. Later it was augmented in two ways: archaeological expeditions and receipt of donations and acquisition of objects. In 1944 the museum joined the Superior Council of Scientific Investigations and since 1984 has modernised and specialised its contents, concentrating preferentially on the archaeological wealth from pre-Hispanic cultures in the Canaries. Its museum, archaeological, book and document collections are an obligatory reference for researchers, students and those who are curious about any aspect of the Canary culture. It is not the principal specialist centre in the Archipelago in vain. Address: Dr. Verneau, 2, Vegueta
