MORE FACTOIDS - Climate: With average annual temperatures that oscillate between 18 and 25 degrees centigrade, Gran Canaria has a year-round springtime climate, recognised by the scientific community as being one of the best in the world thanks to the humid and fresh trade winds coming from the Azores anticyclone. - Population: Gran Canaria is the island with the largest population in the archipelago (741,161 people in the year 2000) and is also home to the main city in terms of number of inhabitants and economic activity: Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. As such, it is also the most cosmopolitan island, above all in its capital where almost half of the population lives. This gives it some special characteristics that can be seen in the open nature of the people and their cultural diversity. The population of Gran Canaria is young when compared with the rest of the country and with Europe, as most of the people fit into the age range of 15 – 45 years. Its population growth is 3.71%, as opposed to 0.27% nationally. - Outstanding trip: Inside Doramas Park, the Pueblo Canario is an especially interesting place. It is an architectural complex made up of constructions typical of the island, with porticos, fortified towers and an atrium.
The Pueblo Canario was designed by the brothers Néstor and Miguel Martín Fernandez de la Torre to enable tourists to learn a little about the island’s culture. Performances by folk groups can often be enjoyed in its large central plaza that is bordered by stalls selling typical Canary Island gifts. - Interesting fact: Part of the film Moby Dick was shot in Gran Canaria´s Las Palmas Bay in 1955. The presence on the island of two cinema legends, John Huston (director) and Gregory Peck (main actor), make it the largest film shooting ever carried out in the Canary Islands. - Practical information: Around twenty Tourist Offices can be found on the island of Gran Canaria, offering information about the different localities and beaches. - How to get there: Gran Canaria is connected by regular flights to the rest of the islands and to the Iberian Peninsula. Apart from these regular flights, the Gran Canaria airport, Gando, offers charter flights to most European cities.
There is also a maritime connection with ferries and jetfoils to the islands of Tenerife, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura and to the port of Cádiz on the Iberian Peninsula. These boats depart from and arrive in Puerto de la Luz in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
