ATTRACTIONS & ACTIVITIES: Beaches Almost 60 of the 235 kilometres of Gran Canaria’s coastline are taken up by different types of beaches, from the impressive Maspalomas, with its 250 acres of dunes on the sea-shore to the hidden virgin sands of Güigüi, not to mention the lively beach of the capital, Las Canteras.
The main beaches are found on the southern slopes of the island, between Tarajalillo and Mogán, which is where the climate is driest and sunniest. Due to the fact that the mountains in the interior hold back the clouds that roll in from the north, the south has clear skies almost all year round, which allow sunbathing and swimming in the sea in both winter and summer months. Maspalomas
This might be the best beach on the island. It is 6,000 metres long and in some places up to 1 km wide. This magnificent extension of white sand and smooth coastline, brushed by a calm azure sea, has for decades been the most visited place in Spain by international tourism in winter.
It has important urban areas with hotels, flats and sport fields, especially in the Faro de Maspalomas where the beach of Pasitoblanco`s marina is found.
Very close to the beach is a large oasis of palm trees and a lagoon (or fresh water lake connected to the sea) that makes the surroundings even more idyllic. The Inglés Beach This beach is located right next to Maspalomas. Its length of 2,700 metres, its fine golden sand and its ever-calm azure sea have made it another favourite destination for international tourism, and the most modern hotel and sport facilities can be enjoyed here.
San Augustín
This beach is less well known as it is located in a very quite area. Its stately urban area with areas of parkland, hotels, bungalows and recreation centres guarantee excellent holidays far away from worldly noise. Puerto Rico
This beach has a modern urban area with flats, hotels, villas and bungalows, as well as a marina with a capacity of 500 vessels. It also boasts numerous installations and facilities for the practice of a large number of sports.
