ANNUAL EVENTS Canary Islands Carnival (Carnaval de Canarias)
This event takes place the last week of January and has its origin in the pagan festivals of Roman times, where people dressed in costume, ate, drank and indulged their libidinous appetites. True to these beginnings, the Carnivals of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria are lascivious and fun, with no limits as to what is forbidden or what should be repressed. Music, costumes, etc… and all the while maintaining good humour and cheer. San Juan Day (Fiesta de San Juan) On the eve of the 23rd of June, this festival celebrates the arrival of the summer equinox. Beach parties with music, dancing, fireworks and bonfires are held. Virgin of the Sea Festivity (Fiestas de la Virgen del Mar)
1st of June. A religious procession is carried out and offerings and thanks are given to a replica of the Virgin of the Sea. Saint Martial Day (Fiesta de San Marcial)
20th of June. A parade is held, culminating in dancing and sampling of local gastronomy.
Virgin of the Crag (Virgen de la Peña) The second week of September, the entire island participates in a pilgrimage (romería) to the Hermitage of la Vega de Río Palmas, which is home to the virgin. Handicrafts are sold and people pray, dance and eat. Sacred Heart Festivity (Fiestas del Sagrado Corazón) The festivals of the Sacred Heart of Maria (Sagrado Corazón de María) have a long history. They originally began in the 17th Century as a consequence of San Juan Eudes’ spiritual movement. Later on, in December 1925, the Holy Virgin appeared to Lucía Martos, seer of Fátima, and promised to come with Saving Grace to the hour of death of all those who confessed, took holy communion and prayed a third of the Rosary on the first Saturday of five consecutive months in order to atone for their sins. Festivity in Honour of Our Lady of the Rosary (Fiestas en Honor a Nuestra Señora del Rosario) This festivity is celebrated around the 7th of October. While the festival is on there are several concerts and religious celebrations and it is also possible to visit the exhibition site or participate in the religious procession, among other activities.
