The stadium was inaugurated on the 24th of September (Day of Mercè, patron of Barcelona) in 1957. That was the year when FC Barcelona abandoned their old “les Corts” stadium for their "new field", with its capacity to accommodate the thousands of fans who loved to attend the live Barcelona games with Kubala and company, and who previously couldn’t fit into the old stadium although it had a capacity of 60,000. "Camp Nou" was inaugurated with a capacity of nearly 90.000, converting it into one of the greatest and most majestic in the world. In spite of diverse initiatives throughout the years to change the official name of the stadium by baptizing it with the name of some historical player or leader, the FC Barcelona members have always preferred to maintain the well-known name, and not to personalize it.
