ANNUAL EVENTS La Tamborinada Middle of May. This children’s festivity takes place in the Parque de la Ciutadella, and offers a range of activities oriented towards the younger ones. The Tamborinada will include circus art, coffee concert, theatre and sports, and will finally close with a big “end of party” dance. Corpus Christi 1st of June. The Corpus Christi that is celebrated in Barcelona has lost several of its initial traditions, but still conserves the most emblematic of all, "l'ou com balla", that is, “the egg that dances”. This dance carries an egg to the top of the water fountain of the Barcelona cathedral. Festa de Bicicleta Second week of June. On this day people leave their cars in their garages to go out by bicycle. With this approach, “cicletadas” are not only organised to create incentive for the sport in the cities’ public spaces, but also to sensitize the neighbours to their natural environment. End of June. This is a true cultural celebration, with scenic arts like theatre and dance as well as many artistic expressions. It is highly recommended to visit the Montjuic Greek Theatre during these festivities due to the sheer amount of different spectacles on show at the time. “Barcelona Kia 08” 7th to 15th June. Once again, Barcelona hosts the “Barcelona KIA” tournament, a competition that has been part of the Sony Ericsson Women's Tennis Association (WTA) Tour since 2007. 15th of August. Along with the commemoration of the Assumption, the neighbours in the district of Gracia go out to the streets to adorn themselves and thus to begin the celebrations that last around one week. The festivities include open air concerts and colourful array of other cultural activities of great interest. National day of Catalonia
11th of September. Also called “Diada”, this day commemorates the fall of Barcelona during the Spanish Succession War in 1714. Amongst the traditions is that of the Catalan political parties, which make floral offerings to the monuments of Rafael Casanova and Josep Moragues, heroes of the Catalan nation that fought during this war. Offerings are also left in the “Foso de las Moreras”; the place where the bodies of the cities’ defenders were buried. Mare de Deù de la Mercé
End of September. They worship Mare de Deù de la Mercé, patron saint of the city of Barcelona. This celebration, of both folk and religious character, includes activities such as the “castellers”, “sardanas”, “correfuegos” and the “piromusical”. The streets fill with musical concerts to dance to and street theatre performances. Terrassa International Jazz Festival
End October and beginning November. This is one of the more important jazz festivals in the country, largely due to its artistic quality and level of organization. Aside from the concerts that are offered, there are master classes, lectures, conferences and meeting with the actual artists. The admission price fluctuates between 18 and 48 euros, depending on the show. Joan Miró Foundation (Fundació Joan Miró) Paintings, sculptures, drawings and tapestries made by Miró from 1901 right through to the Seventies. The Joan Miró Foundation is a large space dedicated to vanguard art that coexists with the permanent collection of the Barcelonan artist. Paintings, sculptures, drawings and tapestries are exhibited.
